How to compare two Word documents online

1

Add both versions

Choose the original DOCX on the left and the revised DOCX on the right. Each file can be up to 20 MB.

2

Choose what to compare

Keep case-sensitive matching or ignore capitalization. Choose whether whitespace differences should count as changes.

3

Review and download

Read the highlighted changes, switch to all passages for context, and save your comparison report.

Review revisions in contracts, reports and drafts

Compare a supplier's revised quotation, a new policy draft or an updated project report. Table cells are included, so changed dates, quantities and amounts can appear alongside edits to the surrounding paragraphs.

Frequently asked questions

Which Word formats can I compare?
Upload two .docx files, up to 20 MB each. Older .doc files, PDFs, encrypted documents and scanned images are not accepted. Save older Word files as DOCX before uploading.
What content is included in the comparison?
The tool compares non-empty paragraphs and table-cell text in the document body. It does not compare fonts, colors, page layout, images, automatic numbering, headers, footers, text boxes, footnotes, endnotes or comments. Blank paragraphs are skipped. Moved text may appear as a removal and an addition.
How do the comparison options work?
Ignore whitespace ignores differences in spacing, tabs and line breaks between text units. Ignore uppercase / lowercase treats capitalization differences as matches. Both original texts are still shown as they appear in the files. Text match measures matching text units under these options; it is not a formatting or visual similarity score.
Does this create a Word Track Changes document?
No. The output is a separate HTML comparison report with highlighted text. It does not modify either DOCX and does not create native Word Track Changes. If a file already contains tracked changes, inserted text is included and deleted text is excluded when comparing.
Can I download or print the results?
Yes. Download the complete HTML report and open it in your browser. Use Open / Print, then the report's Print / Save as PDF button to print or save a PDF. The report includes every compared passage, even if Changes only is selected on screen.
What happens to my uploaded documents?
The documents are uploaded to the ToolTiny server for this comparison. Temporary uploads and processing files are removed when the request finishes. The downloadable report is created in your browser, so download it before closing or resetting the page. Use the tool only for documents you are permitted to upload.
Is the Word comparison tool free? Are there document limits?
Yes. No account or subscription is required. Each file can be up to 20 MB, with up to 200,000 extracted characters and 2,000 non-empty paragraphs or table cells. Very long passages, complex documents or comparisons that take too long may need to be split into smaller sections.
